Paris Retain Champions League Crown After Penalty Shootout Victory Over Arsenal

Arsenal’s dream of lifting the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history ended in the cruelest fashion as Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their European crown, winning a dramatic final on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time.

The Gunners arrived in the final full of confidence after ending a 22-year wait for the Premier League title, and they made the perfect start.

Just minutes into the contest, Leandro Trossard’s relentless pressing forced a mistake in the Paris defence, allowing Kai Havertz to race through on goal. The German forward, who famously scored the winner in Chelsea’s 2021 Champions League triumph, showed his composure once again by blasting a powerful finish past Matvei Safonov from a tight angle to give Arsenal an early lead.

The goal stunned the holders, but only briefly.

Paris gradually took control of possession and spent much of the first half probing for an equaliser. However, Arsenal’s defensive partnership of Gabriel and William Saliba stood firm, frustrating every attacking move. Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué both tried their luck from distance, but neither could find the target.

At the other end, Arsenal nearly doubled their advantage before halftime. Havertz looked destined to score his second of the evening, only for Paris captain Marquinhos to produce a crucial last-ditch block.

Arsenal entered the final having conceded just six goals throughout the competition, and their defensive resilience once again appeared to be carrying them toward glory. But midway through the second half, the momentum shifted.

Cristhian Mosquera brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the penalty area after a slick passing move from Paris. Up stepped Dembélé, who calmly sent David Raya the wrong way to level the score and reignite the French side’s hopes.

The equaliser sparked a tense finale.

Paris continued to dominate possession and patiently searched for a winner. Kvaratskhelia came closest when a dangerous run into the box ended with a shot that took a deflection and crashed against the post. Vitinha and substitute Gonçalo Ramos also threatened late on, but neither side could find the decisive breakthrough.

Extra time followed a familiar pattern. Paris controlled the ball, Arsenal defended bravely, and clear-cut chances remained scarce. With neither side able to separate themselves after 120 minutes, the final headed to a penalty shootout — the first Champions League final to be decided that way since 2016.

The shootout delivered heartbreak for Arsenal.

Eberechi Eze missed his effort, while David Raya briefly revived Arsenal’s hopes by saving Nuno Mendes’ penalty. However, the decisive moment arrived when Gabriel sent his spot-kick over the crossbar, handing Paris a dramatic victory and making them the first club since Real Madrid in 2018 to successfully retain the Champions League trophy.

Vitinha Shines on the Biggest Stage

Paris midfielder Vitinha was named PlayStation Player of the Match after an outstanding performance.

The Portuguese international controlled the tempo throughout the game, particularly in the second half, dictating play from midfield and driving his side forward whenever opportunities arose.

    Paris Show Champion Mentality

For Paris manager Luis Enrique, the victory was a reward for a season built on belief and patience.

After conceding early, his team remained faithful to their style, relying on possession and intelligent movement to wear Arsenal down. Although they struggled to create clear openings against one of Europe’s strongest defensive units, they eventually found a way back into the match before keeping their nerve in the shootout.

“We deserved it,” said Luis Enrique after the final whistle. “Maybe both teams deserved to win tonight, but over the whole season I think we earned this Champions League. Arsenal defended incredibly well and made things very difficult for us.”

Forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia echoed those sentiments.

“The emotions are impossible to describe,” he said. “To win back-to-back Champions League titles is amazing. Penalties require a bit of luck, but they also require preparation. We worked on them, and tonight it paid off.”

Arsenal Fall Short but Earn Respect

Despite the devastating defeat, Arsenal left the competition with their heads held high.

Mikel Arteta’s side combined attacking quality with remarkable defensive discipline throughout the tournament and came within a penalty shootout of completing an unforgettable season.

Declan Rice admitted the result was painful but urged supporters to appreciate how far the team has come.

“It’s devastating,” said the England midfielder. “We’ve played 63 games this season and given absolutely everything. Penalties can go either way. Some of the greatest teams in football history have lost finals on penalties.”

Manager Mikel Arteta was equally proud of his players.

“It’s incredibly tough to lose a final like this,” he said. “But I couldn’t be prouder of this group. They’ve given everything for this club, and it’s a privilege to work with them. Paris are a fantastic team and that’s why they’re champions again.”

For Arsenal, the wait for a first Champions League title continues. For Paris, another chapter of European dominance has been written as they celebrate back-to-back continental crowns after one of the most dramatic finals in recent memory.Image May 31 2026 05 18 34 AM
