Atlético Madrid endured a frustrating first half against Málaga, struggling to create clear chances in a tightly contested match. But after the break, Diego Simeone’s substitutions completely changed the game.

The Atlético boss introduced Lee, Álex Baena and Giuliano Simeone in the 57th minute, and the changes immediately gave his side more energy and attacking threat. Lee marked his debut with a superb goal before Baena produced a stunning free-kick to seal a valuable 2-0 victory at the start of the new La Liga campaign.

Atlético Struggle to Create in a Quiet First Half

The opening 45 minutes were far from convincing for Atlético.

Without Julián Álvarez, the Madrid side found it difficult to break through Málaga’s defensive structure. Atlético managed just four attempts and registered only 0.10 expected goals (xG), underlining how little danger they created in front of goal.

Possession alone was not enough. Atlético struggled to find the final pass, create space in dangerous areas or turn their control of the ball into genuine scoring opportunities.

Simeone knew something had to change.

Simeone’s Triple Substitution Turns the Game Around

The turning point arrived in the 57th minute when Simeone made three changes at once.

Lee, Baena and Giuliano Simeone were introduced, and the impact was almost immediate.

Lee broke the deadlock with an excellent finish, curling the ball into the net with impressive precision to give Atlético the lead. It was a dream start to his La Liga debut.

Baena then doubled the advantage with a superb direct free-kick, giving Málaga goalkeeper little chance and putting Atlético firmly in control at 2-0.

The difference was clear. Atlético played with greater pace, connected better in the final third and finally found the attacking quality that had been missing before half-time.

Simeone Praises the Impact of His Substitutes

Speaking after the match, Simeone explained why he had chosen to start with the players he believed were best prepared to compete.

“We tried to start the game with the players who were in the best condition to compete,” the Atlético manager said.

He admitted that the first half lacked attacking quality but praised the response after the interval.

“In the first half it was about running. We didn’t have chances to score. In the second half, the changes gave us a step up in quality. All the players who came on provided the energy we needed.”

For Simeone, the two goals were a reflection of that improved performance.

“Both goals were very good and we managed to win a game that wasn’t easy.”

Lee Marks His Debut With a Record

Lee could hardly have asked for a better introduction to La Liga with Atlético.

The midfielder scored on his debut and also made a little bit of history. At 25 years and 181 days, he became the third-youngest player to score for Atlético on his league debut in the 21st century.

Lee, who previously played for Valencia, Mallorca and Paris Saint-Germain, also impressed in other areas of the game. Alongside his goal, he finished among Atlético’s leaders for chances created and tackles won.

The new signing admitted that getting off to a winning start was particularly important after a disrupted pre-season.

“The first games were very important. We were lacking match sharpness and training rhythm. It was important to get the victory,” Lee said.

A Positive Start, But Atlético Still Need Time

The three points provide Atlético with an important early boost, but there is still plenty of work to do.

The team looked short of rhythm during the opening period and will need to become more consistent as the season progresses. However, the ability to change a difficult game from the bench will be encouraging for Simeone.

Lee also acknowledged that Atlético are still building towards their best level.

“The whole team did a great job. Thanks to the work we did in the first half, we were able to get the win. We are continuing to train hard. The rhythm isn’t completely there yet, but with work we will improve individually and collectively.”

    Villarreal Next for Atlético

Atlético now turn their attention to their next La Liga challenge, with Villarreal visiting on Sunday, August 23.

That match will provide another opportunity for Simeone’s side to build momentum and show that the second-half performance against Málaga was more than just a one-off.

The depth available from the bench could prove particularly important throughout the campaign, especially with continued speculation surrounding Julián Álvarez.

For now, though, Atlético can focus on the positives. A frustrating first half was transformed by Simeone’s bold changes, Lee announced himself with a debut goal, and Baena delivered a moment of brilliance.

The 2-0 victory showed that even when Atlético struggle to find a way through, they have players capable of changing the story.Image Aug 20 2026 07 21 31 PM
